Chapter 29
âWhat the hell is this?â Nathan said, grabbing the shower head to keep from losing his temper.
She came toward him again, putting her hand on his chest. âMargie told me to come. She told me I need to do my duty for the family.â She stepped closer, reaching out with her other hand.
Nathan took it before it could touch him. âWhat do you think youâre doing?â
âYou donât like me, Nathan?â she asked. âYou donât think Iâm pretty enough?â She turned her head slightly, making her scar and burn less obvious. "I know I'm damaged. Do you think I'm ugly?"
He hadnât noticed one way or another and didnât care. âRhonna, I canât do this.â
âI know, you grew up in the mountains. Youâve probably never been with anyone before, have you? If it helps, I havenât either.â
Nathan couldnât believe this was happening. âIt isnât like that. I just canât.â
Her eyes landed on the ring around his neck. âOh. Is that a wedding ring? Iâve never seen one like that before.â She reached for it.
He turned away. âDonât touch it. I understand genetics. I understand that your group wants more diversity. But I canât give you what you want.â
âYes, you can. Lie down with me, Nathan. Help me help my family, and I can get you whatever you need. Food, clothes, weapons. Anything.â
âIs this what Margie meant by barter?â
She nodded. âPlease, Nathan. I have a responsibility to my people. Iâm twenty-two, and I havenât had a child yet. Iâve put it off as long as I can because I donât want to be with Kilo. He puts on a good show, but he isn't right.â
She sounded desperate. That desperation helped him calm slightly. He let go of the shower head, putting his hands on her shoulders, using his strength to help hold her arms back and keep her away from his body.
âRhonna, listen to me. I canât help you. Even if I have sex with you, I canât help you. I canât have children. Iâm sterile. Iâm sorry.â
Rhonnaâs expression was one of horror. She reacted as if he had just punched her in the face. âSterile?â Her voice was weak. She stepped back, out of the stream of water and away from his grip. Her right hand fell between her legs, and her left across her breasts to cover herself.
âIâm sorry,â he repeated.
âNathan,â she said. âYou donât understand.â She shook her head. âOf all the damn things to happen.â
âItâs fine,â he said, turning the water off. âIâll keep my old clothes. Iâll go. No harm done. Just show me the way out.â
She laughed sardonically. âYou think itâs that easy? We just forget the whole thing, and you leave? Margie isnât going to like this. At all. Sheâs going to be pissed at me, and sheâs going to be pissed at you.â
âI can take care of myself.â
âDamn it; there are over a hundred of us on this train. Youâre one man.â
âShe would kill me over this?â Nathan asked. âAfter all of Kiloâs talk about being good people?â
âWe didnât expect you to say no.
